mauro_biografiaI was born in 1964 in Scala (Sa.), a charming little village on the Amalfi Coast. My family has been interested in photography ever since 1918, obviously initially, only in an amateurish kind of way. Then in the forties my grandfather, Egidio, set up a small photography shop in Ravello (Sa.). Ever since that modest start the professional activity of photographer has been passed on from father to son right down to our days. In fact, in the fifties my father, Luigi, succeeded my granddad in the shop and carried out many developments and improvements in the activity.

I still remember the day when I was only eight years old, my father gave me, as a present, my first camera. It was a Kodak istamatic 126 and I certainly was very exited clicking my very first photographs. Perhaps because relations and friends praised me then for the results of my attempts that I later developed a real passion for photography. In time, thanks to the loving teaching and advices of my father I too became a professional photographer in the footsteps of my dad and my granddad. Obviously I have endeavoured to keep up with the latest technological development in the field of photography and today I have one of the most modern photography activity on the Amalfi Coast. Pictures of the most important events which have taken place on the Amalfi Coast in general and particularly in Ravello are jealously kept in my archive. Often people with interest in photography, in local scenery or in local history ask me for prints of them.

The photographs I take are the expression of my ability and my passion; a passion which has always inspired me to value and to capture unique moments of light, shade and colours interacting to convey the beauty of Nature. After more than twenty years I still remember vividly the deep emotion and pride I felt when I was only sixteen years old and my father asked me to take the photographs of a wedding ceremony. The religious part took place in the Ravello Cathedral and the reception in one of the most fashionable hotels in Ravello. I overheard people whisper that I was so young and so clever. Obviously my father supervised me all through the event advising and encouraging me as necessary, but the congratulations were all for me when the newly-wed collected their photographs. It is also with pride that I recall the words of an English photography critic who said: “Mauro’s photographs have a special rendering together with a singular chromatic effect which harmonizes people and scenery. His unique ability derives from his innate artistic disposition”. For me these words have the flavour of poetry.

ristoranteA symbol of Florentine hospitality, since 1903 Grand Hotel Baglioni has played a leading role in historic and high society events, providing accommodation within its nineteenth century walls for rulers, heads of state, artists, intellectuals and travelers from around the world.

Its imposing mass reaches out towards the sky of Florence standing above the roofs of the centre and looking out on the lovely dome of the Cathedral and Giotto’s Campanile.

Grand Hotel Baglioni preserves the charm and elegance typical of the Florentine tradition but is also equipped with all the most modern comforts, creating a perfect balance between maintaining tradition and continuously improving its services.

The building, former residence to the Carrega Bertolini Princes, features vast, impressive spaces: top quality materials like wood and pietra serena dominate the halls, corridors and stairways, windows still preserve the original glass mounted in lead frames and the very high ceilings are decorated with traditional wooden beams. There are numerous works of art in the hotel including frescos, paintings, statues and an interesting exclusive permanent photo exhibit which uses old and contemporary images to tell one hundred years of Florence’s history.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is followed by the street that reaches out on the whole of the Gulf of Amalfi and that reaches from the peninsula of Sorrent to Salerno. It is, maybe, the part of the coast in the whole of Campania where the settlements perfectly harmonise mit the beauty of the landscape: the range of the Monti Lattari (Lattari mountains) lies directly on the sea and forms an indented coast line with many outreaching cliffs and coves.

Medieval villages, crystalline sea, cliffs mould by the wind and sun, soft and sunny beaches interrupted by promontories and crags, coves and grottoes of savage and suggestive beauty, the unblemished nature of the National Park of the Cilento and Diano Valley: this is the Cilento area.

Umbria

Perhaps it is the evocative nature of the place, or a certain enchanted air (we might almost say “mystic”) that you breathe to some extent everywhere, but sooner or later whoever visits Umbria ends up thinking: Saint Francis, that great, gentle, tender and poetic Saint of happiness and meekness could only have been born here in Umbria.

Our Restaurant La Rocca will welcome you with a panoramic air-conditioned porch, where you can have a wonderful view on the surrounding landscape, with the valley leading to Siena, and the Cetona mount in the background. In summer the restaurant offers some seats in the garden, among olive trees and jasmine flowers, and on a terrace overlooking the valley and the hills by Bardano.

We are particularly interested in typical Umbrian dishes, like the barbeque meat, but we also propose some “Digressions” with fish for our special gourmands. Our kitchen is daily supplied with fresh, genuine products, directly from our farm. Our kitchen garden follows the different seasons with fresh vegetables: salad, tomatoes, potatoes, as well as turnip tops, chicory, spinaches and chards. In summer you’ll find fresh cherries, plums, peaches from our orchard; they are used also in order to prepare tasty marmalades. Poultry breeding assures always fresh chickens, rabbits, hens and geese, as well as fresh eggs, which are used to make cakes, biscuits and tarts for your breakfast. Our kitchen uses only virgin olive oil produced in the farm, and on the wine card you’ll find also wines from our winery Altarocca.

Castel Rubello

Castel Rubello is situated on a hillock, a few kilometres south of Orvieto, close toPorano

Its construction stems from traffic-control reasons, as the castle overlooks the ancient Via Cassia, which was therefore dominated by its walls and, in particular, by its main 40-metre-high tower, the so-called “Maschio”.

There are no certain dates related to its foundation, due to its name changing throughout the time and to the lack of archive documents, before 1200; however, judging by the state of the walls as well as by its architectural elements, it can be approximately estimated that the castle dates back to the 12th century. In the “Piviere di San Fortunato” (an old version of the current land register), Carpenter (pg 6 and on) individuated, with absolute certainty, the original chore of “Villa Podii”, which is nowadays a tiny, enclosed village, together with “Villa Porrani” and “Villa Canale”. The same structure can also be found under the name of Castel Ribello (as Ceccarelli called it, pg. 18) as well as in the 1297 parish land register, with reference to the tithe payments (Sella, pgs 801-916).

Later on, the Castle became a possession of the Monaldeschi family, who took refuge there in 1345, before gaining the entrance to the city of Orvieto, of which they previously were the Lords (Fumi, 1884, pg. 501). The Castle remained a shelter for exiles until 1420, when the Pope Martino V allowed special privileges to the inhabitants of Castel Rubello and Porano, including the exemption from paying the ” heads and acres tax, as a reward for the damages suffered under the war” (Fumi, 1884, pg. 677).

The Monaldeschi family re-gained possession of Orvieto in 1437, thanks to Gentile della Sala (Gentile Monaldeschi della Vipera) who, in agreement with Pietro Ramponi, the Civical Rector of the Patrimony, entered in in Orvieto with Ugolino da Montemarte, Ranuccio da Castel di Piero as well as other “Mercorini”, slaughtering the members of the opposing faction, the “Muffati”. As a result of this battle, over 60 people died and numerous houses were burnt.
